Many people complain of shortness of breath. This can be a result of a number of things including lung disorders. However, one can significantly improve their blood oxygen levels simply by breathing properly. When it comes to the right way of breathing, there are some exercises that your loved one can do that can significantly improve their breathing.
In this article, we show you some of these techniques and the benefits that they confer to your loved ones.
Morning Exercises
One of the first things we do when we wake up is to yawn, stretch and probably take a deep breath. This is not by accident as the body requires increased amounts of oxygen in order to power you through the day. You can help this process by trying out a few things:
- While upright, bend your waist while at the same time slightly bending your knees. Your arms should be by your side.
- Move back upright slowly while at the same time taking deep breaths. Your head should stay down until your back is upright.
- As you bend forward again, exhale slowly as you return to the bending position.
You can do this several times as it helps in getting maximum levels of oxygen into your lungs and onto your bloodstream.
Focused Breathing
This is a combination of breathing exercises as well as meditation. Start this technique by lying down on your back. If you don’t have enough space to lie down, you can vary this by sitting down. Close your eyes and breath slowly. As you do this, slow down your breathing while increasing the amount of air that you take in. Focus on the breathing itself and notice how the air goes on and out of your body. Try to exclude any other thoughts from your mind other than breathing.
Many people struggle with this particular exercise especially if it is their first time trying out meditation. You will probably fail at first at keeping your focus on breathing. This, however, is normal. Gently bring back your focus to the breathing and keep doing it whenever your mind wanders.
Pursed Lips Exercise
This is a great technique if you are anxious or if you are having difficulties in breathing. With this, purse your lips as you would if you were about to whistle. With your lips in this position, breathe in and out gently through your mouth.
You should be careful when doing any breathing exercise to ensure that you do not harm yourself. For example, if you experience any light-headedness while performing any of these techniques, you should stop immediately and breathe normally until you feel better.
